Mast flex sucks, second post. Just received a fresh cedrus mast so I performed a stiffness test, takuma aluminum (75cm long, 15.5mm thick) vs cedrus (77cm long, 19mm thick).
A 30 pounds load is applied at the tip of the wing, vertically for bending and horizontally for twisting, and the flex is measured in cm.
– Flex : The cedrus mast bends 40-50% less and twists 15-25% less than the takuma aluminum mast.
– Weight : The cedrus (classic) mast with mount and adaptor weights 1.63kg, the takuma mast with mount weights 1.91kg, cedrus is 15% lighter and probably much much stronger.
– Drag : To be tested in the water!
The future of masts is probably universal, rigid and thin.. but we are not there yet.. Exciting times!
